I've hit a bad section of the book for beer and brewers apparently. According to beerme.com:

Golden Pacific moved from Emeryville to Berkeley in 1997. They closed down in May 2003, but only temporarily; new owner Gambrinus Co. upgraded the plant and added a new bottling line, and they reopened as Trumer Brauerei Berkeley in 2004.

This is good news for beer lovers but not Golden Pacific beer.

A little more than half of the breweries remain open and so I guess this is about par for a business schematic for success and failure. Especially in this field of endeavor. This amber lager is available in most major Texas cities on tap and in bottles. I toured the brewery, and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of their operation, considering their "youth" in the business. They brew using only water, hops, malt and yeast (look out Germany!). Around a ton of grain is used for each batch, and when at full capacity, they can turn out around 24,000 gallons a month. Three hop varieties are employed, and five different barley malts are used. They have their own yeast strain which began as a hombrewing project, and was propagated into the quantities needed for their purposes.

The beer is an amber colored lager with a clean taste, and a pleasant hoppiness. Being a hop-head I might look for more hops, but the beer is certainly not under-hopped.

So, if you have the chance, why not order a Frio and support Texas (micro)Beer!.

Frio ceased operations in '97/early '98. The brewery was bought by Gambrinus, apparently for use as a test brewery by Shiner...we'll see about that.

Mishawaka Brewing Company's "Founder's Stout" has been brewed since August 1992 and is the winner of multiple awards including the 1996 World Beer Cup's "Gold Cup", the 1998 World Beer Cup's "Silver Cup" and the 1995 Silver Medal Winner at the Great American Beer Festival.

It is an Irish-style dry stout with seven malts. It has a roasted coffee flavor with a distinctive dry-roasted bitterness in the finish.
